How to Add Bullet Points in Excel:
3 Different Ways (+Awesome Shortcut)

Unlike most word processors,Excel doesn't have a button for adding bullets. It seems like such a simple thing, but Microsoft neglected to include it.
That doesn't mean you can't insert bullet points into Excel, though. You just have to know how to do it.
Open up a new spreadsheet and let's get started!
*This tutorial is for Excel 2019/Microsoft 365 (for Windows). Got a different version? No problem, you can still follow the exact same steps.
Adding bullets with the keyboard
If you have a number pad on your keyboard, you can use a keyboard shortcut to add bullet points in your cells. (If you don't have one, see the note on AutoHotKey below).
Double-click into a cellto start editing directly in that cell.
Then, pushAlt + Numpad 7 orAlt + Numpad 9 for a bullet. 7 gets you a solid bullet, and 9 gets you an unfilled one.
You'll find that hitting Enter doesn't let you continue the list like it usually does.
To add another bullet to your list, hitAlt + Enter to go to a new line, then press the shortcut for another bullet.
If you want to add a new line after you've unselected a cell, you'll need todouble-click it again.
Pro tip: if you don't have a number pad
Not every keyboard has a number pad. And if yours doesn't, it can make life difficult—especially when it comes to adding bullets in Excel.
But a little program called AutoHotkey can help. Download the app and read the basic tutorial to get started.
Then, create a script with these lines:
!1::!Numpad1 !2::!Numpad2 !3::!Numpad3 !4::!Numpad4 !5::!Numpad5 !6::!Numpad6 !7::!Numpad7 !8::!Numpad8 !9::!Numpad9 !0::!Numpad0
Now, whenever you press Alt and a number, your computer will interpret it as Alt and the number pad version of that number.
If you use Alt and numbers for any other commands, this might mess with them, so be aware of that. You may have to get creative. But this will help you get started.
Using the Symbol menu
If you don't have a number pad and you don't want to use AutoHotKey, you can add bullets manually.
Click into a cell, then click theInsert tab and theSymbol button:
TheSymbol menu will appear. Select the icon you'd like to use for your bullet:
Click Insert, then close theSymbol menu.
Now you have a bullet in your cell!
HitAlt + Enter to get to a new line again.
To save yourself some time,enter 2022 in the character code box to skip to the bullet.
That way you don't have to scroll through until you find it.
Copying a bulleted list
Another method you can use is to write your bulleted list in Word first.
From there, you can copy the list and paste it into Excel (if you don't know how to insert Excel data into Word, check out our guide).
It will retain the bulleted formatting in the cell you've pasted it into as long as you double-click first.
If you forget to double-click, your lines and bullets will end up in different cells.
Keep your spreadsheets organized
Bullets are great for keeping your information organized, especially if you have a lot of text in your spreadsheet.
Don't forget that you can add checkboxes, too!
